How to chant the Navagraha Mantras

How many times

108 a day for the planet of that weekday. Formal graha-shanti counts are much larger and are best done with a priest.

When

On the planet's weekday, in the morning (Rahu and Ketu in the evening).

  1. Light a diya and offer a flower in the colour associated with the planet.
  2. Chant the seed mantra on a mala, then the Navagraha Shanti shloka.
  3. Charity on the planet's day is part of the remedy in tradition.

About the Navagraha Mantras

In Hindu tradition the nine grahas, the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, are worshipped as deities who shape the circumstances of life. Each has a seed mantra chanted on its own weekday, or for a period when an astrologer advises graha shanti. The closing shloka asks all nine, with Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, to bring peace.

Questions

Do I need to chant all nine Navagraha mantras?

Many people chant only the shanti shloka daily, and the seed mantra of a particular planet on its weekday when they feel a need. Jyotish is a matter of faith and tradition; for specific advice families consult their own pandit.
