How to chant the Tulsi Mantra

How many times

Each verse once, at the moment it belongs to.

When

Water in the morning; a ghee diya at dusk, every day of Kartik in particular; Tulsi Vivah after Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

  1. Offer water to Tulsi after your bath, reciting Mahaprasada Janani.
  2. Light a diya before her in the evening and circle her plant.
  3. Pick leaves only when needed for puja, reciting the mantra. By custom leaves are not picked on Sundays, on Ekadashi or after sunset.

About the Tulsi Mantra

Tulsi, the holy basil, is worshipped as Vrinda Devi, dearest to Vishnu; no offering to Vishnu or Krishna is complete without a tulsi leaf. Most Hindu homes keep a tulsi plant in the courtyard or balcony, watered in the morning and given a diya in the evening, especially through the month of Kartik. On Dev Uthani Ekadashi and the days after, Tulsi is married to Shaligram in Tulsi Vivah.

Questions

When should tulsi leaves not be plucked?

By custom, not on Sundays, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, during eclipses, or after sunset. Leaves fallen on their own can be used on those days.
