About the Shanti Mantras

Shanti mantras open and close the study of the Upanishads, and today they open school days, yoga classes, conferences and havans. Each ends with shanti spoken three times, for peace from the three sources of trouble: within oneself, from other beings, and from nature and unseen forces.

Questions

Why is shanti said three times?

For peace from the three kinds of suffering: adhyatmika (from one's own body and mind), adhibhautika (from other beings) and adhidaivika (from nature and unseen forces).

Which shanti mantra is used in schools?

Om Saha Navavatu, the prayer of teacher and student together, and Asato Ma Sadgamaya are the most common in Indian schools.
