📍 Chino Hills (Los Angeles), California
Southern California's traditional stone mandir beside a lotus-shaped pond, completed in 2012 and described as the world's first earthquake-proof mandir.
History
Pramukh Swami Maharaj first visited California in 1977 and inaugurated a small centre in Whittier in 1984. In 1996 the growing congregation proposed a larger campus with a traditional stone mandir, and found land beside the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills.
Winning the city's permits took years, but the mandir was completed in 2012 on a 20-acre site with a 91-foot lotus-shaped pond, a cultural centre, a gymnasium and classrooms. About 900 volunteers, many of them second-generation Indian Americans, gave some 1.3 million hours of work, and solar panels supply much of its power.
