History & significance
Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi), on the thirteenth day of the dark half of Kartik, opens the five days of Diwali. It is the day Lord Dhanvantari, physician of the gods, rose from the churning of the ocean holding the pot of amrit, which is why it is also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day. Maa Lakshmi and Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, are worshipped for wealth that stays, and buying gold, silver or a new utensil is considered auspicious. At dusk families light a four-wicked lamp for Yama, the lord of death, outside the main door (Yam Deepdaan), recalling the young prince whose wife saved him from death with a wall of lamps and jewels.

धनतेरस (धनत्रयोदशी), कार्तिक कृष्ण त्रयोदशी को, दीपावली के पाँच दिनों का आरंभ है। इसी दिन देवताओं के वैद्य भगवान धन्वंतरि समुद्र मंथन से अमृत कलश लेकर प्रकट हुए थे, इसलिए इसे राष्ट्रीय आयुर्वेद दिवस के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है। स्थिर धन के लिए माँ लक्ष्मी और देवताओं के कोषाध्यक्ष कुबेर की पूजा होती है, और सोना, चाँदी या नया बर्तन खरीदना शुभ माना जाता है। संध्या को परिवार मुख्य द्वार के बाहर यमराज के लिए चौमुखा दीपक जलाते हैं (यम दीपदान), उस राजकुमार की याद में जिसकी पत्नी ने दीपों और गहनों की दीवार से उसे मृत्यु से बचाया था।
Step-by-step puja vidhi

- Step 1
Clean the house, make a rangoli at the entrance and hang a toran of marigold and mango leaves.
घर की सफाई करें, द्वार पर रंगोली बनाएँ और गेंदे व आम के पत्तों का तोरण लगाएँ।
- Step 2
During the day buy something new for the home: a brass, copper or steel utensil, a gold or silver coin, and traditionally a broom and whole coriander seeds (dhaniya).
दिन में घर के लिए कुछ नया खरीदें: पीतल, तांबे या स्टील का बर्तन, सोने या चाँदी का सिक्का, और परंपरा से झाड़ू व साबुत धनिया।
- Step 3
In Pradosh kaal (the evening after sunset), set up a chowki with a red cloth and place Lakshmi-Ganesh, Kuber (idol, picture or Kuber yantra) and a picture of Lord Dhanvantari.
प्रदोष काल (सूर्यास्त के बाद) में लाल कपड़ा बिछाकर चौकी पर लक्ष्मी-गणेश, कुबेर (प्रतिमा, चित्र या कुबेर यंत्र) और भगवान धन्वंतरि का चित्र रखें।
- Step 4
Purify with Ganga jal, take a sankalp, and worship Lord Ganesh first with tilak, durva and a laddu.
गंगाजल से शुद्धि करें, संकल्प लें और पहले गणेश जी की तिलक, दूर्वा और लड्डू से पूजा करें।
- Step 5
Worship Lord Dhanvantari with tulsi leaves, yellow flowers and a ghee diya, chanting 'ॐ धन्वन्तरये नमः' and praying for the family's health.
भगवान धन्वंतरि की तुलसी पत्र, पीले फूल और घी के दीपक से पूजा करें, 'ॐ धन्वन्तरये नमः' का जाप कर परिवार के आरोग्य की प्रार्थना करें।
- Step 6
Worship Maa Lakshmi and Kubera: place the new utensil or coin before them filled with sweets or rice, offer kumkum, akshat, flowers, coriander seeds and khil-batashe, and chant 'ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥'.
माँ लक्ष्मी और कुबेर की पूजा करें: नया बर्तन या सिक्का मिठाई या चावल भरकर उनके सामने रखें, कुमकुम, अक्षत, फूल, धनिया और खील-बताशे अर्पित करें, और 'ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥' का जाप करें।

Light thirteen diyas inside and around the home.
घर के अंदर और आसपास तेरह दीये जलाएँ।
- Step 8
Yam Deepdaan: light a four-faced (chaumukha) diya of mustard oil with four wicks, place it outside the main door facing south, and pray to Yamraj for the long life of the family.
यम दीपदान: सरसों के तेल का चार बत्तियों वाला चौमुखा दीपक जलाकर मुख्य द्वार के बाहर दक्षिण दिशा की ओर रखें और परिवार की लंबी आयु के लिए यमराज से प्रार्थना करें।
- Step 9
Sing the aartis 'Om Jai Lakshmi Mata' and the Kuber aarti, and distribute prasad.
'ॐ जय लक्ष्मी माता' और कुबेर आरती गाएँ और प्रसाद बाँटें।
- Step 10
Keep the coriander seeds and coin in your safe or cash box as a blessing for the year.
धनिया और सिक्का वर्ष भर के आशीर्वाद के रूप में तिजोरी या गल्ले में रखें।
