History & significance

Navratri, the 'nine nights', is the festival of the Divine Mother. On the first day (Pratipada) the Goddess is invited into the home through Ghatasthapana: a kalash of holy water, crowned with mango leaves and a coconut, is set up beside a bed of soil sown with barley (jau) and an akhand jyoti, a lamp kept burning through all nine days. Each day one of the nine forms of Durga, the Navadurga, is worshipped: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri. The nine nights recall the battle in which the Goddess destroyed Mahishasura, and they end with Kanya Pujan on Ashtami or Navami and Vijayadashami on the tenth day.

Step-by-step puja vidhi

Scroll the path — a lamp lights for every step.

  1. Step 1

Clean the home and puja place the day before. On Pratipada, bathe early and take a sankalp (vow) for the nine days of puja and fasting.

  2. Step 2

Ghatasthapana in the morning muhurat: spread clean soil in a wide clay pot, sow barley (jau) in it and sprinkle water.

  3. Step 3

Fill a clay or copper kalash with Ganga jal and water; add a coin, supari, akshat, a pinch of turmeric and durva. Tie mauli around its neck and draw a swastik on it with roli.

  4. Step 4

Place five mango leaves in the mouth of the kalash and set a coconut wrapped in red chunri and mauli on top. Place the kalash on the barley bed.

  5. Step 5

Set up a wooden chowki with a red cloth, and place Maa Durga's idol or picture on it with a red chunri. Worship Lord Ganesh first, then invoke the Goddess into the kalash.

  6. Step 6

Light the akhand jyoti with ghee (or sesame oil) and keep it burning through all nine days; trim the wick and add ghee as needed.

  7. Step 7

Each morning: offer water, roli, akshat, red flowers, incense and a ghee diya, and worship the day's form of Navadurga with her bhog (see the next step).

  8. Step 8

Bhog for each day: 1 Shailputri, cow's ghee; 2 Brahmacharini, sugar or mishri; 3 Chandraghanta, milk or kheer; 4 Kushmanda, malpua; 5 Skandamata, bananas; 6 Katyayani, honey; 7 Kalaratri, jaggery; 8 Mahagauri, coconut; 9 Siddhidatri, sesame, or halwa-puri-chana.

  9. Step 9

Recite the Durga Chalisa or a chapter of the Durga Saptashati daily, and chant 'Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu'. Water the barley lightly every day.

  10. Step 10

Every evening, light the diya and sing the aarti 'Jai Ambe Gauri' with the family.

  11. Step 11

If fasting, eat only sattvic food: fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu or singhara atta, sendha namak; no grains, onion or garlic.

  12. Step 12

On Ashtami or Navami perform Kanya Pujan, then break the fast. On Dashami, move the kalash respectfully, sprinkle its water around the home, immerse the barley sprouts (or keep a few as blessing) and conclude the puja.

Blessings of this puja

Navratri worship invites the Divine Mother's protection, strength and peace into the home. The discipline of the nine days, with its prayer, fasting and simple living, purifies body and mind, and the sprouting barley is taken as a sign of the prosperity of the year ahead.
