History & significance

Kanya Pujan, also called Kanjak or Kumari Puja, is the worship of young girls as living forms of the Goddess on Ashtami or Navami of Navratri. Nine girls, usually between two and ten years old, represent the nine forms of Durga, and a young boy joins them as Langur, Bhairav's form and the Mother's guardian. Their feet are washed, they are honoured with tilak, chunri and gifts, and they are served the sacred meal of halwa, puri and black chana. Families traditionally break their Navratri fast only after the kanyas have eaten and given their blessings.

Step-by-step puja vidhi

Scroll the path — a lamp lights for every step.

  1. Step 1

Invite nine girls (ideally aged 2 to 10) and one young boy (Langur) a day ahead, on Ashtami or Navami as your family follows.

  2. Step 2

In the morning, after the day's Durga puja, prepare the prasad: suji halwa, puris and dry black chana cooked without onion or garlic.

  3. Step 3

Welcome the kanyas at the door with folded hands and seat them in a row on a clean mat or chairs.

  4. Step 4

Wash their feet in a plate with clean water (or milk and water), wipe them dry, and apply alta or a little kumkum to the feet if that is your custom.

  5. Step 5

Apply a roli tilak with akshat on each child's forehead, tie mauli on the wrist and offer a red chunri or flowers.

  6. Step 6

Serve halwa, puri and chana on each plate (with a little fruit or kheer if you like), first offering a plate to Maa Durga.

  7. Step 7

After they have eaten happily, give each child a gift and dakshina: bangles, a hair clip, a small toy, stationery or a coin.

  8. Step 8

Touch their feet, seek their blessings and see them off warmly. Then sing the Durga aarti and break your Navratri fast with the prasad.

Blessings of this puja

Honouring young girls as the Goddess is the most joyful act of Navratri. It completes the nine days of worship, teaches the family to see the divine in every girl, and is believed to bring the Mother's blessings of health, happiness and prosperity.
