Shri Durga Chalisa Lyrics

Namo namo Durge sukh karni, namo namo Ambe dukh harni, Nirankaar hai jyoti tumhaari, tihun lok phaili ujiyaari.

Salutations to Durga, giver of happiness; salutations to Ambe, remover of sorrow. Your light is formless, and its radiance fills the three worlds.

Shashi lalaat mukh mahavishaala, netra laal bhrikuti vikraala, Roop maatu ko adhik suhaave, darash karat jan ati sukh paave.

The moon adorns your brow and your face is vast; your eyes are red and your brows fierce. The Mother's form is most beautiful, and those who behold it find great joy.

Tum sansaar shakti lay keena, paalan hetu ann dhan deena, Annapurna hui jag paala, tum hi aadi sundari baala.

You hold the power that dissolves the world, and you gave grain and wealth to sustain it. As Annapurna you nourish the world; you are the primordial, eternally young beauty.

Pralaykaal sab naashan haari, tum Gauri Shivshankar pyaari, Shiv yogi tumhre gun gaave, Brahma Vishnu tumhein nit dhyaave.

At the time of dissolution you destroy all; you are Gauri, beloved of Shiva. Shiva and the yogis sing your virtues, and Brahma and Vishnu meditate on you always.

Roop Saraswati ko tum dhaara, de subuddhi rishi munin ubaara, Dharyo roop Narasimha ko Amba, pargat bhai phaadkar khamba.

Taking the form of Saraswati, you gave wisdom and uplifted the sages. O Amba, you took the form of Narasimha and appeared by bursting from the pillar.

Raksha kari Prahlaad bachaayo, Hiranyaksh ko swarg pathaayo, Lakshmi roop dharo jag maahin, Shri Narayan ang samaahin.

You protected and saved Prahlada and sent the demon to heaven. Taking the form of Lakshmi in the world, you dwell in the body of Shri Narayana.

Matangi aru Dhumavati Mata, Bhuvaneshwari Bagla sukh daata, Shri Bhairav Tara jag taarini, Chhinna bhaal bhav dukh nivaarini.

You are Matangi and Mother Dhumavati, Bhuvaneshwari and Bagalamukhi, givers of happiness. As Bhairavi and Tara you save the world, and as Chhinnamasta you end the sorrow of worldly life.

Kehari vaahan soh Bhavani, Langur veer chalat agvaani, Kar mein khappar khadag viraajai, jaako dekh kaal dar bhaajai.

Bhavani is radiant on her lion, with the heroic Langur walking ahead. The skull-cup and sword shine in her hands; seeing them, even Death flees in fear.

Sohai astra aur trishoola, jaate uthat shatru hiy shoola, Nagarkot mein tumhin viraajat, tihunlok mein danka baajat.

Your weapons and trident gleam, piercing the hearts of enemies with fear. You reside at Nagarkot, and your drum resounds in the three worlds.

Shumbh Nishumbh daanav tum maare, Raktabeej shankhan sanhaare, Mahishasur nrip ati abhimaani, jehi agh bhaar mahi akulaani.

You slew the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha and destroyed countless Raktabijas. Mahishasura was a most arrogant king, and the earth groaned under the weight of his sins.

Roop karaal Kaalika dhaara, sen sahit tum tihi sanhaara, Pari gaadh santan par jab jab, bhai sahaay maatu tum tab tab.

Taking the terrible form of Kali, you destroyed him with his whole army. Whenever hardship fell on the saints, O Mother, you came to their help.

Amarpuri aru Baasav loka, tab mahima sab rahein ashoka, Jwala mein hai jyoti tumhaari, tumhein sada poojein nar-naari.

By your glory the city of the immortals and Indra's realm remain free of sorrow. Your flame burns at Jwala (Jwalamukhi), and men and women worship you always.

Prem bhakti se jo yash gaavein, dukh daaridra nikat nahin aavein, Dhyaave tumhein jo nar man laai, janm-maran taakau chhuti jaai.

Sorrow and poverty never come near those who sing your glory with loving devotion. Whoever meditates on you with a focused mind is freed from birth and death.

Jogi sur muni kahat pukaari, yog na ho bin shakti tumhaari, Shankar Aachaaraj tap keeno, kaam aru krodh jeeti sab leeno.

Yogis, gods and sages proclaim that no yoga is possible without your power. The teacher Shankara performed austerities and conquered desire and anger.

Nishidin dhyaan dharo Shankar ko, kaahu kaal nahin sumiro tumko, Shakti roop ka maram na paayo, shakti gai tab man pachhitaayo.

He meditated on Shiva day and night but never remembered you. He did not grasp the secret of Shakti; when his strength left him, he regretted it.

Sharnagat hui keerti bakhaani, jai jai jai Jagdamb Bhavani, Bhai prasann aadi Jagdamba, dai shakti nahin keen vilamba.

Taking refuge in you, he sang your praise: victory, victory to Jagadamba Bhavani! The primordial Mother was pleased and restored his strength without delay.

Moko maatu kasht ati ghero, tum bin kaun harai dukh mero, Aasha trishna nipat sataavein, ripu moorakh mohi darpaave.

O Mother, great troubles surround me; who but you can take away my sorrow? Hopes and cravings torment me, and foolish enemies frighten me.

Shatru naash keejai Maharani, sumiraun ikchit tumhein Bhavani, Karo kripa he maatu dayaala, riddhi-siddhi dai karahu nihaala.

Destroy my enemies, great Queen; I remember you, Bhavani, with a single mind. Be gracious, compassionate Mother, and bless me with prosperity and success.

Jab lagi jiun daya phal paaun, tumhro yash main sada sunaaun, Shri Durga Chalisa jo koi gaavai, sab sukh bhog parampad paavai.

As long as I live, may I receive the fruit of your mercy and always sing your glory. Whoever sings this Durga Chalisa enjoys every happiness and attains the highest state.

Knowing Devidas to be in your refuge, be gracious, Jagadamba Bhavani. You protect those who seek refuge, so your devotees live without fear; I have come to your shelter, Mother, take me in your lap.

Significance of Shri Durga Chalisa

The Durga Chalisa is a hymn of forty chaupais to Maa Durga, attributed to the poet Devidas. It praises her as the formless light that fills the three worlds, as Annapurna, Saraswati and Lakshmi, as the ten Mahavidyas, and as the slayer of Mahishasura, Shumbha-Nishumbha and Raktabija, and ends with a heartfelt prayer for her protection. Many families recite it every day of Navratri, either after the morning puja or before the evening aarti.
