By Sant NarahariLanguage Marathi4 verses

Durge durghat bhari tujvin sansari, Anathnathe Ambe karuna vistari. Vari vari janma-marananten vari, Hari padalon aata sankat nivari.

O Durga, without you this worldly life is too hard to bear. Mother Amba, protector of the helpless, spread your compassion. Ward off, ward off the round of birth and death; I have fallen defeated, so now remove my distress.

Refrain

Jai Devi Jai Devi Mahishasur-mathini, Survar Ishwar varade taarak sanjeevani. Jai Devi Jai Devi.

Victory to the Goddess who crushed Mahishasura! You grant boons to the gods and their lords; you are the saviour and the herb of life.

Tribhuvan-bhuvani pahata tuj aise nahi, Chari shramale parantu na bolave kahi. Sahi vivad karita padale pravahi, Te tu bhaktalagi pavasi lavlahi.

Search all the three worlds and there is none like you. The four Vedas tired themselves but could not describe you; the six schools of philosophy argued and were swept away. Yet you come running at once to your devotee.

Prasannavadane prasanna hosi nijdasa, Kleshanpasuni sodavi todi bhavpasha. Ambe tujvanchun kon puravil aasha, Narahari tallin jhala padpankaj-lesha.

O smiling one, you are pleased with your own servants: free them from suffering and cut the noose of worldly life. Mother Amba, who but you can fulfil our hopes? Narahari is lost in the dust of your lotus feet.

About the Durge Durghat Bhari

Sung across Maharashtra during Navratri, at the Ambabai, Tulja Bhavani and Saptashrungi temples, and as the third aarti of every Ganeshotsav evening, this aarti is a child's cry to the Mother: without you, this world is too hard to bear. It ends with the poet Narahari lost at the dust of her lotus feet.
