About the Navarna Mantra
The Navarna (nine-lettered) mantra is the root mantra of the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya). Its three seed syllables invoke the three great forms of the Goddess whose stories the Saptashati tells: Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, all one as Chamunda. During Navratri it is chanted by the mala each day, and those who read the Saptashati chant it 108 times before and after the path.
