Kamakhya Temple, Guwahati
कामाख्या मंदिर, गुवाहाटी
📍 Nilachal hill, Guwahati, Assam
On Nilachal hill above the Brahmaputra, Kamakhya is among the most revered Shakti Peethas. Devi is worshipped here not as an idol but as a sacred stone in a spring-fed cave.
नीलाचल पर्वत पर ब्रह्मपुत्र के ऊपर — प्रमुख शक्तिपीठ, जहाँ मूर्ति नहीं, गुफा में पवित्र शिला की पूजा होती है।
इतिहास History
The temple is ancient. After it was destroyed in the early 16th century, the Koch king Naranarayana rebuilt it in 1565 with its distinctive beehive-shaped dome.
It is a great centre of Shakta worship, surrounded by shrines of the ten Mahavidyas.
कथा The legend
When Sati gave up her life at Daksha's yajna, Shiva wandered the cosmos carrying her body. Vishnu's chakra divided it, and a Shakti Peetha arose wherever a part fell. Kamakhya is where her yoni fell, the seat of creative power.
