Lavthavati vikrala brahmandi mala, Vishe kanth kala trinetri jwala. Lavanyasundar mastaki bala, Tethuniya jal nirmal vahe jhuljhula.
Swaying, immense and fearsome, wearing the universe as a garland; his throat dark with poison and flame in his third eye. On his head sits the lovely young Ganga, and from there pure water flows murmuring.
Jai Dev Jai Dev Jai Shri Shankara, Aarti ovaloon tuj Karpurgaura. Jai Dev Jai Dev.
Victory to Lord Shankara! I wave the aarti to you, O camphor-white one.
Karpurgaura bhola nayani vishala, Ardhangi Parvati sumananchya mala. Vibhutiche udhalan shitikanth neela, Aisa Shankar shobhe Umavelhala.
Camphor-white, innocent, with wide eyes; Parvati is half of his body, and he wears garlands of flowers. Smeared with sacred ash, blue-throated: such is Shankara, beloved of Uma, in his splendour.
Devi daityi sagarmanthan pai kele, Tyamaji avachit halahal je uthile. Te tvan asurpane prashan kele, Neelkanth naam prasiddha jhale.
When gods and demons churned the ocean, the deadly halahala poison suddenly rose from it. You drank it down without fear, and so became famous as Neelkanth, the blue-throated.
Vyaghrambar phanivardhar sundar Madanari, Panchanan manmohan munijan-sukhkari. Shatkotiche beej vache uchchari, Raghukul-tilak Ramdasa antari.
Clad in tiger skin, bearing the serpent king, beautiful foe of Kamadeva; five-faced, enchanting, the joy of sages. He utters with his lips the seed of the hundred-crore Ramayana, the name of Ram, jewel of the Raghu clan, who lives in Ramdas's heart.
About the Lavthavati Vikrala
Samarth Ramdas's Shiva aarti is sung right after Sukhkarta Dukhharta in Maharashtrian homes during Ganeshotsav and at Shiva temples on Mondays and Shivaratri. It paints Shiva as vast and terrible, wearing the universe as a garland, with poison darkening his throat and the Ganga flowing from his locks, and yet camphor-white, gentle and the lord of Parvati.
