About the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam

The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam is the hymn Indra sang to Lakshmi, according to the Padma Purana, after he had lost his kingdom and splendour and won them back by her grace. It salutes her as Mahamaya, seated on Garuda, holding the conch, discus and mace, destroyer of the demon Kolasura and remover of all sorrow. The phala shruti promises that reciting it once a day removes sin, twice brings wealth and grain, and three times destroys great enemies.
