मैया मोरी मैं नहिं माखन खायो। भोर भयो गैयन के पाछे, मधुबन मोहि पठायो। चार पहर बंसीबट भटक्यो, साँझ परे घर आयो॥
Maiya mori main nahin maakhan khaayo, Bhor bhayo gaiyan ke paachhe, Madhuban mohi pathaayo, Chaar pahar Bansibat bhatakyo, saanjh pare ghar aayo.
Mother, I did not eat the butter! At dawn you sent me to Madhuban behind the cows; all day I wandered by the Bansibat tree and came home only at dusk.
मैं बालक बहियन को छोटो, छींको किहि बिधि पायो। ग्वाल बाल सब बैर परे हैं, बरबस मुख लपटायो॥
Main baalak bahiyan ko chhoto, chheenko kihi bidhi paayo, Gwaal baal sab bair pare hain, barbas mukh laptaayo.
I am a little boy with short arms: how could I reach the pot hanging from the ceiling? The cowherd boys are all against me; they smeared it on my face by force.
तू जननी मन की अति भोरी, इनके कहे पतियायो। जिय तेरे कछु भेद उपजि है, जानि परायो जायो॥
Tu janani man ki ati bhori, inke kahe patiyaayo, Jiya tere kachhu bhed upaji hai, jaani paraayo jaayo.
Mother, you are so innocent at heart that you believe what they say. Some doubt has come into your heart, as if I were someone else's child.
यह लै अपनी लकुटि कमरिया, बहुतहिं नाच नचायो। सूरदास तब बिहँसि जसोदा, लै उर कंठ लगायो॥
Yah lai apni lakuti kamariya, bahutahin naach nachaayo, Soordas tab bihansi Jasoda, lai ur kanth lagaayo.
Here, take back your stick and blanket; you have made me dance enough! Surdas says: then Yashoda burst out laughing and hugged him close to her heart.

About the Maiya Mori Main Nahi Makhan Khayo
Surdas, the blind poet of Braj (15th–16th century), painted Krishna's childhood as no one else has. In this pad, caught with butter on his face, little Kanha argues his case to Mother Yashoda: he was out with the cows all day, the pot hangs too high for his small arms, the cowherd boys smeared it on him. At last Yashoda laughs and hugs him close. It is sung on Janmashtami in every home.
