About the Shiv Manas Puja

Manas puja is worship performed in the mind. In these five verses Adi Shankaracharya imagines offering Shiva everything a royal puja would hold: a jewelled throne, a bath in cool water, silk and sandal, flowers, a feast in golden vessels, music and dance. In the fourth verse the worship turns inward: Shiva is the Self, the body his temple, sleep is samadhi, every step a circumambulation and every word a hymn. The last verse asks forgiveness for every fault. Because nothing outward is needed, it can be recited anywhere, and it is often sung at the end of Shiva puja and on Mahashivaratri.

Questions

What is manas puja?

Worship offered in the mind. The devotee imagines each offering, from the seat and the bath to the lamp and the food, and offers it with full attention; Shankara's hymn shows that the inner offering can be as complete as the outer one.

Why is the verse Atma Tvam Girija Matih so loved?

It turns the whole of life into worship: the body is Shiva's temple, sleep is samadhi, walking is circumambulation, speech is praise, and every action is offered to Shiva.
