Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, Ellora

घृष्णेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग, एलोरा

📍 Verul, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra

A short walk from the Ellora caves, Grishneshwar is the last of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is a red-stone temple where Shiva answered the steadfast devotion of Ghushma.

एलोरा गुफाओं के पास — बारहवाँ ज्योतिर्लिंग, जहाँ शिव ने घुश्मा की अटल भक्ति का फल दिया।

इतिहास History

The temple was rebuilt in the 16th century by Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and again in the 18th century by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar.

Its red basalt walls are carved with Vishnu's avatars and many other deities.

कथा The legend

Ghushma, a devout woman, shaped lingas of clay every day and immersed them in a lake. Her jealous co-wife killed her son, but Ghushma kept praying calmly. Shiva restored the boy to life and, at her request, stayed on as Ghushmeshwar.
