इतिहास History
South Indian community leaders formed the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago in 1977 and chose Rama as its deity for his wide appeal. After looking at about thirty sites they bought eighteen acres of bluff land near Lemont; the foundation stone was laid in June 1984, and the Rama temple was consecrated with a kumbhabhishekam on 4 July 1986.
In 1994 the original building on the site became a temple for Ganesha, Shiva and Durga. The Swami Vivekananda Spiritual Center holds yoga, meditation and talks, and beside it stands a 10-foot bronze of Vivekananda, recalling his famous 1893 addresses at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago.
