About the Bhaja Govindam

Tradition says that Adi Shankaracharya, walking through Kashi with his disciples, saw an old man cramming the rules of Sanskrit grammar and broke into this song: grammar will not save you when death comes, so worship Govinda. The first verses, the Dvadasha Manjarika, are Shankara's own; the later ones are credited to his disciples. In the simplest words it reminds us that youth, wealth and family pass away, and that only the company of the good, knowledge of the Self and remembrance of God carry us across the ocean of birth and death. It is also called Moha Mudgara, the hammer that shatters delusion, and its line Punarapi Jananam Punarapi Maranam is known everywhere.

Questions

Why is Bhaja Govindam called Moha Mudgara?

Mudgara means a mallet. The hymn strikes at moha, the delusion that clings to wealth, youth and family, and turns the mind towards Govinda.

What does Dukrin Karane mean?

It is an entry from Panini's list of verb roots: the root kri, to do. Shankara tells the old grammarian that memorising such rules will not save him at the hour of death.

Did Adi Shankaracharya write all of Bhaja Govindam?

He composed the opening verses, which verse 13a calls a bouquet of twelve; tradition credits the later verses to his disciples, as verse 32 says.
