Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple

गुरुवायुर श्री कृष्ण मंदिर

📍 Guruvayur, Thrissur, Kerala

Often called the 'Dwarka of the South', Guruvayur is one of the holiest Krishna temples. Here the four-armed Guruvayurappan is cherished as the child Krishna.

‘दक्षिण की द्वारका’ — जहाँ चतुर्भुज गुरुवायुरप्पन बाल कृष्ण रूप में पूजे जाते हैं।

इतिहास History

Guruvayur is woven into Kerala's devotional literature. Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri composed the Sanskrit Narayaneeyam here in 1586, and the poet Poonthanam wrote his Malayalam Jnanappana in devotion to Guruvayurappan.

A great fire in 1970 damaged the outer structures, but the sanctum and the murti were saved. The Guruvayur Devaswom runs the temple today, along with its elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta.

कथा The legend

The murti is believed to have been worshipped by Krishna himself in Dwarka. When Dwarka sank, Guru Brihaspati and Vayu, the wind god, carried it across the land and installed it here at Shiva's suggestion, which is why the place is called Guru-vayur.
