इतिहास History

Nageshwar near Dwarka is one of the shrines venerated as the 'Nagesham Darukavane' Jyotirlinga of the stotram. Aundha Nagnath in Maharashtra and Jageshwar in Uttarakhand are also revered with this name.

The modern temple is known for the large statue of Shiva seated in meditation, about 25 m tall, that rises over its garden.

कथा The legend

The demon Daruka imprisoned the merchant Supriya, a devotee of Shiva, along with others in his city beneath the sea. Supriya kept chanting Shiva's name and inspired the prisoners to do the same. Shiva appeared as a jyotirlinga and destroyed the demon.
