Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram
रामेश्वरम — रामनाथस्वामी मंदिर
📍 Rameswaram, Pamban island, Tamil Nadu
On Pamban island at the tip of India, Rameswaram is both a Jyotirlinga and one of the four Char Dham. Its linga is the one Shri Ram himself worshipped.
भारत के दक्षिणी छोर पर — ज्योतिर्लिंग भी और चार धाम भी, जहाँ स्वयं श्रीराम ने शिव की पूजा की।
इतिहास History
The temple grew over many centuries. Much of the present structure was built from the 12th century onwards, especially by the Sethupathi rulers of Ramanathapuram.
It is renowned for having the longest temple corridors in India, lined with thousands of carved pillars.
कथा The legend
After the war in Lanka, Rama wished to worship Shiva to atone for killing Ravana, a Brahmin. Hanuman flew to Kailash for a linga, and when he was delayed, Sita shaped one from sand: the Ramalingam in the sanctum. Hanuman's linga, the Vishwalingam, was installed too, and Rama ordained that it be worshipped first.
